Energy Rebates in Western Canada: A Quick Guide for Lighting, EVs, Renovations and More

What energy, EV and LED-lighting rebates are available in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan?

Programs vary by utility, municipality, property type and the type of upgrade, with options available for homeowners, businesses, property owners and organizations. Current programs support everything from home energy upgrades, solar and EV charging to commercial lighting, building systems and industrial energy-efficiency projects.

Examples include BC Hydro’s Business Energy Saving Incentives, Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Strategic Energy Management for Industry and SaskPower’s Commercial Energy Optimization Program.

Whether you’re planning a home retrofit, commercial lighting upgrade or larger industrial project, checking available funding early can help shape the project and product selection before work begins.

Here’s a quick look at some of the rebate programs and resources available across Western Canada.

  • Home Renovation Rebate Program: Up to $12,500 for eligible home energy-efficiency upgrades, including heat pumps, insulation, windows and doors. It’s a joint BC Hydro, FortisBC and CleanBC program.

CleanBC Go Electric

  • Public Charger Program: Rebates for eligible Level 2 electric vehicle chargers and DC fast-charging stations available for public use. Note: The program runs competitive application intakes, so it's worth checking the current window before you plan a project.

  • Workplace Charging Rebates: Support for eligible EV charging stations at workplaces.

  • Fleet Charging Rebates and Support: Rebates and support for businesses and organizations planning charging infrastructure for vehicle fleets.

  • Home EV Charging Rebates: Covers 50% of eligible Level 2 charger costs, up to $350 for most eligible homeowners; additional incentives can apply in some circumstances.

  • Multi-Unit Residential EV Charging: Includes EV Ready planning, infrastructure and charger rebates for condos, apartments and townhomes. This is especially relevant because electricians and property managers can be involved in these projects.

Alberta Energy Incentives and Financing

Emissions Reduction Alberta

  • Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI): An industrial energy-efficiency incentive program that helps Alberta manufacturing and industrial facilities improve energy performance through training, energy-management activities and funding for eligible upgrades.

  • Capital Retrofits: A SEMI funding stream for eligible energy-efficiency upgrades such as LED lighting, motors and VFDs, HVAC, pumping systems and automation. New applications are being accepted to a waitlist.

Clean Energy Improvement Program

  • Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP): Long-term financing for eligible energy-efficiency and renewable-energy upgrades for residential and commercial property owners in participating Alberta municipalities. Repayment is made through the property tax bill. Note: CEIP provides financing rather than a rebate.

Saskatchewan Energy Rebates and Programs

SaskPower

  • Commercial Energy Optimization Program (CEOP): Helps businesses identify and implement energy-efficiency opportunities with technical and financial support.

  • Energy Assistance Program: A free program for income-qualified households that can include energy-saving products such as LED lighting and smart thermostats, along with a home energy walkthrough.

SaskEnergy

Could an Energy or Lighting Audit Help You Find Savings?

Before deciding what to replace, it helps to know where your biggest opportunities are. A lighting audit reviews existing fixtures, controls, lighting layout and energy use to identify potential upgrades and estimate associated costs and savings.

That information can also help when evaluating rebate opportunities. Contractors can use it to compare options with customers, while facility owners, architects and designers can consider available incentives before specifications and budgets are finalized.

Check Current Rebates Before You Start Your Next Project

Rebate programs, funding levels and eligibility requirements change frequently. Even within the same province, what’s available can depend on the utility, municipality, building type and project.
