Electrical Safety Solutions: Understanding the Benefits of Shock Block®
Shock Block® Active Ground Fault Protection
The Littelfuse Shock Block® is designed to improve electrical safety in demanding environments by:
- Detecting leakage current
- Monitoring ground continuity
- Rapidly disconnecting power before dangerous conditions escalate
It meets UL 943 and UL 943C standards for GFCI and special purpose GFCI protection, providing a comprehensive solution for both standard and higher load applications
How Shock Block Works
Understanding how electrical protection functions is key when designing or maintaining safe pool and water feature systems. The Littelfuse Shock Block is designed to continuously monitor electrical current and quickly respond when unsafe conditions are detected.

How Protection Happens
The Shock Block operates by detecting imbalances in electrical current and interrupting power before a hazardous condition can develop. The process can be broken down into four key steps:
-
Current flow through an unintended path
In a fault condition, electrical current can travel outside its intended path, including through a person in contact with energized equipment or conductive water. -
Current imbalance is detected
An internal current transformer continuously monitors the system and identifies any imbalance between outgoing and returning current. This imbalance indicates leakage current, which may present a shock hazard. -
Circuit interruption for protection
When a fault is detected, the Shock Block control circuit responds by opening the circuit and removing power. This rapid disconnection helps protect personnel by preventing sustained exposure to electrical current. -
Ground continuity monitoring
The system also checks the integrity of the ground connection between the device and the load. If the ground wire is damaged, disconnected, or has high resistance, the unit will alarm and deenergize the circuit. This proactive protection helps prevent hazardous voltage from developing.
Shock Protection For Larger Loads
The SB5000 Industrial Shock Block® is designed to meet UL 943 and UL 943C requirements for both GFCI and special purpose GFCI protection. It is commonly applied in commercial and industrial environments where higher load equipment is used and dependable protection is critical. Key Protection Capabilities
The SB5000 delivers a comprehensive approach to electrical safety by:
- Protecting personnel from electrical shock in applications where standard GFCI breakers or receptacles are not available
- Detecting leakage current and isolating electrical hazards before they escalate
- Monitoring ground circuit continuity to identify faults early and reduce risk
- Supporting equipment longevity through undervoltage, brownout, and contactor chatter detection

Shock Block Applications
FOOD & BEVERAGE PROCESSING
All cables used in heavy portable equipment are prone to wear and tear. Cable couplers are more susceptible to water ingress, and the shock hazards in these wet environments are just as lethal as the higher industrial voltages.
The SB5000’s NEMA 4X and IP69K rated enclosures allow for protection and operation out on the production floor instead of complicated installations in dry electrical rooms. Utilizing the ground check feature available on every model of the Shock Block, is a proactive way to isolate the hazard caused by damaged cords and plugs before someone gets shocked.

COMMERCIAL GARAGES, SERVICE BAYS, & MAINTENANCE SHOPS
Portable equipment is frequently used in commercial Garages, service Bays, and maintenance shops. The frequent use of portable equipment to accommodate different tasks can create or lead to situations where shock is more likely to occur. When a worker is focused on a task in front of them, leakage current from damaged cords and cables can present itself to those unsuspecting personnel.
For welding applications, if the ground lead is damaged or not setup properly, then welding current will take alternate paths through facility structure, ground conductors, and conduit fittings. When this stray current runs through conduit or control panels, it causes the conductors to heat up and melt insulation. The SB5000’s built-in ground monitoring ensures the effective ground-fault current path stays intact and proactively prevents future shock hazards from occurring.
