Machine Safety Standards in British Columbia: A Refresher for Employers
Powered machinery keeps industrial operations moving, but without the right safeguards in place, it can also create serious risk.
For B.C. employers, industrial machine safety is a key occupational health and safety obligation. Part 12 of the WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation sets out machine safeguarding requirements for a wide range of tools, machinery, and equipment used in manufacturing, processing, packaging, warehousing, fabrication, food production, and other industrial environments.
While the core regulation may not have changed, expectations around machine safety are receiving increased attention, with ongoing enforcement focus and anticipated regulatory updates and clarifications expected in 2026. Employers are being required not only to comply on paper, but to demonstrate in practice that machinery is properly safeguarded, maintained, risk assessed, and used in a way that effectively prevents workers from being exposed to hazardous moving parts.
For many facilities, this means now is a good time to review your machine safety program – especially if your equipment has been modified, retrofitted, bypassed, expanded, or adapted over time. A proactive review can help identify whether existing safeguards are still appropriate, whether risk assessments are documented, and whether safety systems are functioning as intended.

Understanding B.C.’s Machine Safety Regulations: WorkSafeBC and CSA Z432
Effective safeguarding starts with how people will interact with equipment during normal operation, setup, cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and jam clearing. Common areas of concern include:

Missing, damaged, or ineffective guards

Bypassed or defeated interlocks

Inadequate lockout procedures

Poor visibility into hazardous motion

Modified or custom equipment without updated safeguarding

In British Columbia, machine safety requirements are primarily addressed in Part 12 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, which applies to tools, machinery, and equipment. The regulation includes requirements related to safeguarding points of operation, power transmission components, and other hazardous motions, as well as more specific requirements for equipment such as conveyors, presses, woodworking machinery, abrasive equipment, and industrial robots.
WorkSafeBC also provides guidance on safeguarding machinery and equipment, including how to identify hazards, assess risk, and select appropriate controls. Its safeguarding resources emphasize that risk assessment should consider the nature of the hazard, the likelihood of exposure, and the potential severity of injury.
CSA Z432, Safeguarding of Machinery, is commonly used as a benchmark for the design, selection, and performance of safeguards. While CSA standards are not legislation on their own, they become legally enforceable when referenced in the WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. In BC, CSA Z432 is explicitly referenced for machinery safeguarding and is widely used to evaluate whether safeguarding is appropriate for the equipment, task, and level of risk.
