When harmonics are present in a power system, they can lead to a range of issues, including increased losses, overheating of equipment, voltage and current distortion, and interference with sensitive electronic devices. Harmonic filters address these problems by reducing or eliminating harmonic currents and voltages.
HPS dV/dT filters are specifically designed to be placed between variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motors when longer cable lengths are involved. The HPS Centurion™ D1 dV/dT filter combines an inductor and parallel resistor network to effectively address high frequency components and voltage spikes between the VFD and motor. It offers superior mitigation capabilities compared to using just a reactor. By slowing down the rate of voltage increase, the D1 filter provides motor protection and minimizes the harmful peak voltages that can occur within the motor’s windings and along the cable length supplying power to the motor.
The HPS Centurion™ P passive harmonic filter, meticulously crafted to combat harmonic currents generated by non-linear loads. Available in a range from 5 to 500 horsepower, this innovative solution not only enhances power quality but also concurrently diminishes harmonics while improving the true power factor. With its cutting-edge design, the HPS Centurion P surpasses conventional harmonic filters by reducing harmonic current distortion by an impressive 80%, typically achieving 5% or less at full load. It also rectifies the true power factor to over 95% and satisfies the harmonic requirements outlined by IEEE 519 when operated within specified parameters.
The HPS Centurion P employs a distinctive LCL arrangement of reactors and capacitors, purposefully engineered to alleviate a wide spectrum of harmonics commonly associated with variable frequency drives and other three-phase rectifiers.
During the development of our passive harmonic filter, HPS has conducted thorough performance validation through a real system installation. To assess the effectiveness of the filter, measurements were taken at the input of both the passive harmonic filter and a variable frequency drive operating without the filter. By utilizing the actual measured data points, we were able to demonstrate the current distortion and analyze the harmonic spectrum in a tangible manner.
HPS reactors address line-side issues with VFDs, reducing voltage and current transients and minimizing harmonic current levels. When used on the output side, they lower motor temperature, reduce noise, and enhance system performance and efficiency.
Introducing the HPS Centurion R reactor, combining enhanced performance and reliability in a compact design. These reactors provide motor and AC drive protection while minimizing power system harmonics. With a wide range of standard ratings from 0.5 HP to 1000 HP, up to 690 V, they fully comply with UL, CSA, CE, IEC, and NEMA standards.
