After many years of experimentation, Thomas Edison cracked the code into a practical incandescent light bulb. The secret was a high-resistance cotton filament that burned over 14 hours and consumed less electricity than other models. By combining the filament and the Sprengel air pump invention, Thomas improved the suction of gasses out of glass bulbs. As a result, the incandescent light bulb was born.
